The sweetest things come from children! Once I was ill and in the hospital. After a week, I was discharged to go home. As often happens when you’ve just been released from a hospital, I really didn’t feel up to cooking, cleaning or doing much of anything that required staying awake. My friends and family delivered the goods when it came to feeding my husband and me, running errands, doing laundry and keeping the house tidy. Their get well wishes came in the form of actions that helped me to keep up the house and my strength as I recuperated. To this day I remain grateful for their support.

However, their little ones brought the biggest smiles to my face every day. Too young to do chores or run errands, they made things to let me know they cared. They sent little notes in crayon saying, “Do git weal!” and “Mrs. S, I lov u!” and “You will bee OK ril soon!” They cut pictures out of magazines that depicted things they knew I liked: flowers, birds, puppies, theater, singing, and (no surprise) playing with children. Using glue sticks they attached the notes and cut-outs to two giant pieces of poster board. Those who could, signed their names. Those who couldn’t sign their names drew pictures of themselves. They had a grown up write Get Well Soon on the posters and deliver them to my house. I looked at them every day. I am still grinning ear to ear as I write this. And I still have my best ever Get Well card!
